Volunteering in our Community
NONC supports giving back to our community throughout the year. With the Fourth of July upon us, and hopefully a few extra days off, it’s a great time to think about ways to improve your community and volunteer or donate to causes that count. It’s truly an all-American thing to do! Most people donate money or time in different and often personal ways (such as the Komen Foundation’s Race for the Cure). I deeply enjoy giving my time to causes that I feel strongly about. For most of my life, I’ve felt a great connection to seniors (and always want to beat my sisters out for the position of favorite granddaughter ;-) so when I discovered Mike’s Place at Meals on Wheels and More I knew it was the perfect place for me to give of my time.
The once-a-week program is for those affected by Alzheimer’s and other types of memory loss diseases; the Wednesday morning to early afternoon time frame gives the caregivers of our guests a much needed chance to run errands, catch up on work or just relax.
The regular ‘guests’ are fantastic, and I really did “fall for” so many of them as soon as I met them. These seniors are incredibly warm and gifted people, and I love hearing stories of their lives -- meeting their wives and husbands, learning about their careers, moving around the country for the military and more. Each guest has an amazing history, and spending time with them is a joy for me and all of the other caring volunteers involved in this enriching program.
For me, even when work gets busy and it’s hard to keep up with all of my friends and enjoy everything this amazing city has to offer, I love knowing that I spent a few hours each week just getting away from it all and enjoying the great company at Mike’s Place. Not an escape from work by any means, but something that makes you appreciate everything you have and want to contribute even more!
